My fiance and I recently held our wedding reception at the Shaffer. In general the staff was very nice and the food was good. However, the owner of the hotel is irresponsible and does not care about her guests. Every time we went in, to make arrangements, and even the day of our wedding, we had to ring the buzzer repeatedly – no response – before finally entering the hotel via the restaurant. When we made the last deposit, she tried to get extra money out of us for rooms already paid for, lost her copy of the signed contract, and then tried to convince us to change the contract that had already been signed by myself and a member of her staff for services to be provided. She blatantly ignored all of the instructions and requests we made, and indicated that while one of her staff remembered, she chose to ignore this staff member. As an example, three hours before the start of the reception, she called me to ask if the reception was at 4 or 6 pm – she thought it was at 6, her staff member thought it was at 4; the staff member was correct, and this information was stated in the signed contract (which, as stated, was misplaced).

Not open for business. On Nov 10, 2014, I found it closed and for sale.

Was enchanted by this historic hotel. Rooms were clean and the folks very friendly. It's sort of a museum of its own with art deco ceiling in the restaurant. Food was good. Would stay again.

She also walked around the reception hall in extremely casual clothing refilling drinks - we wish that she had left this to the servers (who were extremely polite and helpful, and to whom we are very grateful). Additionally, I barely got to eat at my own wedding reception because every time I picked up my fork, she walked over to ask another question - all questions were supposed to be directed to one of our groomsmen so my new husband and I could enjoy the reception and mingle with our guests uninterrupted. It was very difficult to enjoy our reception with her constant interruptions, usually to confirm event details that had been discussed with her and other hotel staff at least a week before. It may also seem nitpicky, but my name was also blatantly misspelled on the door to the banquet hall, when hotel staff had it written down in at least three locations – and all of the guests noticed and commented on the error, to my great embarrassment. I was also made very uncomfortable by her watching the event from the doorway, apparently without reason, but I was not sure how to ask her to leave politely.

Close to the Indian Ruins.

All in all, the staff were very nice, the bridal suite was extremely nice, and the hotel was nice enough to comp our breakfast the following morning. However, the owner herself is very scatterbrained and needs to act in a more professional manner towards her paying customers. After the beautiful ceremony, the reception was a gigantic letdown. If you want to stay at the hotel, we recommend it, but we don't advise holding large events there as long as the owner is this unprofessional. This is the reason for the low rating for service.
